On the last Wednesday in May each year, about 100,000 senior adults across the United States observe National Senior Health and Fitness Day.

It is a time to celebrate all the benefits of leading an active lifestyle. Some of these are:

  • reduce fall risk and increase the ability to live independently
  • maintain strength, healthy joints, and muscles
  • helps reduce or control blood pressure
  • reduce the risk of colon cancer and diabetes
  • ease symptoms of anxiety
  • offer community and companionship when done in groups
  • reduces and prevents arthritis joint swelling and pain

Many insurance plans offer special fitness benefits for seniors such as Silver Sneakers and Renew Active. Additionally, some gyms offer discounted or free memberships and training programs geared to seniors. However, if you prefer a more independent approach, walking is still one of the best ways to keep fit. You can find the right pair of shoes, carry your cane if you need one for additional support, and most importantly, know your limitations. Walk only as much as is safe and comfortable for you, giving you the freedom and flexibility to manage your own fitness routine.

The summer is almost upon us, so it gets hot early in the day and lasts way into the evening hours. Your water intake is crucial whatever exercise you choose, but it's especially important if you are walking outdoors. Ensuring you stay hydrated will help you feel safe and comfortable during your exercise routine.

Get up, get active, and pursue the right fitness goal for you!
